Netflix Love Death & Robots: The Tall Grass - Animated short Concept Art

Worked with Axis Studios on The Tall Grass Animated Short for Netflix: Love Death and Robots.. Shown here are concepts and production art sheets I did for the train carriage. Pencil and Photoshop. My task was to design the carriage exterior and interior (for the latter, a concept of one of the cabins was done by Art Director Bram Sels which set the tone). The train was meant to be "a typical train" around 1910, referencing Pullman-style carriages / cars. There was not much time for the concepts and production art and I spent about half the time with research, turned into ref-sheets for the art director to pick his favourite design elements from and give further info to the modelers. For copy-right reasons, I am not able to show any of these ref sheets, nor the rather large material and detail callout sheets. I tried very hard to provide period-accurate designs within the time, though train enthusiasts may notice the European-style interior (the story required section interiors instead of open interiors) combined with the American Pullman-themed exterior and a couple of smaller simplifications. I also did the research on which locomotive should be used and suggested the Mikado-type model that was eventually picked, for which I also did material callouts and design adjustment suggestions to help modelers upgrade the basic model that was acquired. The most enjoyable aspect of this project to me was the related research (trains are awesome ^^).

Final production art sheet for overall dimensions and interior sections. The blurred bits were additional photo refs to help the modelers, removed here for copyright reasons.

The last carriage in the train was meant to have signal lights as a real train would have, however, to not distract from the characters, these lights and the manual brake wheel were removed by the director. Note: Character added for scale, by Bram Sels

For dramatic reason there was a request to change the little doors and fixed stairs to retractable ones that could drop down with great effect... but eventually this was changed back to regular stairs : D
